Care & Maintenance
To keep your delicate Guatemalan Fabrics vibrant and intact, follow this specialized care and maintenance routine. Handcrafts like these feature unique natural dyes and delicate embroidery that require gentle handling.Washing Instructions
- Pre-test for colorfastness: Dab a damp white cloth onto a hidden area of the patchwork. If color transfers to the cloth, wash the item alone in cold water to prevent bleeding.
- Prepare a cold bath: Fill a clean basin with cold water. Hot water can shrink the fibers and cause the vibrant textile dyes to bleed.
- Use gentle detergent: Add a small amount of mild, pH-neutral liquid detergent or wool wash. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, and fabric softeners.
- Agitate gently: Submerge the patchwork. Gently swirl it through the water with your hands for two to three minutes. Do not scrub, wring, or twist the fabric, as this can break the delicate stitching.
- Rinse thoroughly: Drain the soapy water. Refill the basin with clean, cold water and submerge the item again. Repeat this process until the water runs completely clear of soap.
Drying Instructions
- Remove excess water: Lay the patchwork flat on a clean, dry, light-colored towel. Roll the towel up with the fabric inside, pressing gently to absorb excess moisture. Never wring out the patchwork.
- Air dry flat: Reshape the item and lay it flat on a dry towel or a mesh drying rack. Keep it out of direct sunlight, as UV rays will rapidly fade the traditional dyes.
- Avoid hanging: Do not hang the wet patchwork on a clothesline or hanger. The weight of the water can pull the delicate stitching out of shape.
